A revolutionary new trailer coupling concept from VBG
2005-07-01VBG introduces a revolutionary new type of trailer coupling: the totally integrated Multi Function Coupling concept, which allows the driver to operate the coupling from inside the cab. All coupling functions – electrical, pneumatic and mechanical – are fully integrated to provide maximum comfort, ergonomics and safety. |

In-cab coupling – A world first!
“For the first time in history the driver will now be able to manoeuvre the coupling by just pushing a button on the dashboard”, says Thomas Bergenklev, marketing manager at VBG Produkter AB. The coupling is aligned with the drawbar using the vechicle’s built-in reversing camera system. After that, everything happens automatically: the coupling
is activated, followed by connecting the pneumatic and electrical functions.“We realised that the total integration we had set out to achieve would require a radical approach. As a result, the new coupling concept owes very little to existing designs, which more or less all rely on the same basic technology, regardless of manufacturer”, Thomas Bergenklev continues.
All-in-one for maximum comfort and safety
The MFC 2000 concept also includes av new type of triangular drawbar eye with built-in electrical and pneumatic connectors. The coupling itself is protected behind a weather-proof hatch that is closed when the coupling is not in use. The entire coupling process can be monitored on the reversing camera display, which most of today’s trucks are equipped with already.
A natural step for VBG
“We began manufacturing trailer couplings to serve an unfulfilled need for better safety. Then we added simplicity by introducing semi-automatic couplings. Power actuators later offered a solution to ergonomical issues, and in the last few years we have managed to integrate the air assistance with the couplings for even higher levels of reliability. Now, with the MFC 2000 concept, we take a giant leap towards levels of comfort and safety previously unheard of”, concludes Thomas Bergenklev.
Field testing
Thomas Bergenklev is also stressing the fact that the new MFC 2000 is not a show concept, but very much a reality: ”The research and development process has involved close co-operation with the leading truck manufacturers, with prototypes in succesful field test programs for more than a year by now”. However, an exact market launch date has not yet been determined.
