Futuristic concept MFC giant step closer to reality – now in field tests

VBG’s totally integrated Multi Function Coupling concept, MFC, has since its presentation as a pilot project in 2004 taken giant steps closer to reality. The integration has now been taken even further, and field tests with prototypes are in full progress.

Coupling from the cab - a unique global innovation
“With the MFC it is now possible for the first time for the driver to handle all the connecting and disconnecting with just one push of a button from the cab,” explains Thomas Bergenklev, Marketing manager at VBG Produkter AB.

Ultrasonic sensors make the guiding simple. The information is converted to audio and visual signals on a display on the dashboard, after which the automatic system takes care of everything – the coupling of the trailer, the pneumatics, the electrical system, and now even the hydraulics.

All-in-one for maximum comfort and safety
The multifunction concept MFC incorporates several patented solutions. In addition to the new coupling, the system also consists of a completely new type of triangular shaped drawbar eye with integrated connectors for the electric power, hydraulics and air. The actual coupling is protected behind a panel, which opens during the connection. The panel also functions as a guide for the drawbar eye.

Backlash-free coupling for a better working environment
“The new concept also eliminates any backlash between the truck and trailer, which considerably increases driver comfort. Because the driver does not need to leave the cab, there is also an improvement of the working environment and less risk of injuries. MFC quite simply improves comfort at all levels,” says Thomas Bergenklev.

Testing in traffic in full progress
The latest generation of prototypes has been in operation for some time now, with excellent results.

“We have had our laboratory tests confi rmed by test drivers in the fi eld, who have shown great enthusiasm for the new concept,” concludes Thomas Bergenklev.

One of the prototypes is demonstrated at Elmia Lastbil 2006, the biggest Nordic forum for the transport industry, where the general public has the opportunity to acquaint themselves with the actual hardware. Exactly when the new concept will be on the market has not yet been decided.
